BIRD WATCHING ETIQUETTE

There are certain guidelines to follow to insure the maximum enjoyment for all when on a bird walk.

FOLLOW THE LEADERS

Stay behind the leaders who are trying to find and identify birds for you. Going ahead the group scares away birds before the group has had a chance to see them.

QUIET

Loud talking can also scare away birds and prevents hearing their sounds. (50% of Id’s are by sound) If you want to chat, drop behind the group out of earshot.  Also avoid pointing at the bird or making sudden movements.

LOCATING THE BIRD

Saying “in the tree” is not specific enough. Look for a lone tree or bush, rock or fence for reference. Or “stand behind me and look where |am looking” can get others into the general area. Also using a clock face can aid in speedy location. Use of twelve o'clock, six o'clock, 3 and 9 o'clock are very helpful.

For distance, estimate an obvious dimension such as % way down the hill or % from top of the tree. Also saying “about 20-40 ft. or just under 100 ft.” can keep people from searching too far.

If the bird flies out of sight, don’t waste time on where the bird used to be. Note the bird color and its orientation: hanging upside down, clinging to a tree trunk or sitting on a branch. Compare the bird's size to a well -known bird. Is it half the size ofa crow? Sparrow size?

USING THE SPOTTING SCOPE

When a group of people are waiting to use the scope, it’s good birding etiquette to take a brief look then step aside and let the next person take a quick look. After everyone has had a turn, then take a longer look. Adjust the focus of the scope to your own eyes.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Keep an eye out for holes, rocks, branches, etc. from which you can fall. Also keep an eye out for poison oak, thorns, and branches that may hit you in the face when walking through a wooded area. Avoid stepping of trail - rattlesnakes!

OF IMPORTANCE

Dress for the weather, have hat, water, and sturdy shoes.  Tell the leader or someone if you are leaving early.  Drivers keep track of people who ride in your car.

HAPPY BIRDING!
