OCEAN HILLS BIRDWATCHERS CLUB

MINUTES OF GENERAL MEETING SEPTEMBER 24, 2019

The general meeting in the Ladies Club Room was called to order at 1:04 P.M by club President William Saltzman. (This meeting was originally scheduled for August 27 but was preempted by the clubhouse fumigation.) Bill introduced the 2019 Board of Directors, Callie Dean, Treasurer , Co-Vice Presidents Ann Mulvey (absent) and Jane Johnson, Tim Pentel, Secretary. Callie delivered the treasurer’s report, current balance being $1,096.13 which is way under budget, meaning there is sufficient monies to make the October party free. Bill told that Carolyn and Jerry Hollander were away and were retiring as the OHCC Blue Bird Recovery Program coordinators and that Jane Shriver had volunteered to take over. Jane spoke briefly and encouraged members to volunteer as monitors. A signup sheet was circulated. Training will begin in February and monitoring starts in March. She reminded all that there are 14 boxes on the golf course, 7 each on the front and back nine.

Bill thanked Callie Dean and Vickie Bates for today’s refreshments. Then he summoned Skip Harvey, former VP, to conduct the election of the 2020 Board. Skip told that William Saltzman was leaving the presidency after three stellar years of leadership, and the same applied for Callie Dean who was leaving the treasurer post. For 2020, the slate consists of Ann Baldwin, President; Jane Johnson, Vice President; Dick Cook, Treasurer; Tim Pentel, Secretary, Skip conducted a separate election for each by show of hands and each was approved unanimously. Our thanks to the volunteers.

The assemblage was then treated to a slide show, dubbed Birding 102, presented by two of the community’s best birders and photographers, Joan Comito and Ann Baldwin. First, Joan explained that Birding 101 was to learn identification of the bird. Birding 102 consists of observing behavior to glean additional information about the bird. Joan shared a number of her fine photos and explained how, after location and identification, patient observation revealed additional interesting characteristics of the bird, how they nest, care for their hatchlings, etc. Ann then displayed some of her work and shared some of the knowledge she had obtained by the same careful observation. Our thanks to Joan and Ann and to Mike Baldwin for operating the controls.

The meeting adjourned at 2:04 P.M.

Tim Pentel, Secretary/Historian
